Within the past year Indians have emerged as the fifth largest investors of real estate in the United States, according to Times of India reporter Lubna Kablyl. While Chinese nationals continue to be the biggest foreign investors in residential property in the United States, spending 31.7 billion dollars during a 12 month period ending in March of 2017, Indians have become a major competitor. In fact, Indians have purchased residential property worth 7.8 billion dollars in the same period.

Recent data from the National Association of Realtors (NAR) revealed that more than one third of Chinese investors purchased residential property in California. Meanwhile, Indian investors were not as concentrated to any particular state, rather their jobs and children’s education largely determined their location.

In total, foreign buyers have purchased roughly $153 billion of residential property in the United States between April 2016 and March of 2017, marking a 49% increase from the previous period. Despite rising home prices and the strengthening of the U.S. dollar, foreigners continue to invest in the United States maintain their beliefs that the United States is a safe and secure place to live and raise a family. In fear of a weak local currency has only intensified foreign buyers to accelerate their investments.
